WILKINSON & GRIST is one of Hong Kong's oldest and best known firms of lawyers. Members of the firm sit on Government advisory bodies, including the Patents Working Party and Law Reform Commission on Copyright and they often give lectures and seminars locally and abroad on all topics.
WILKINSON & GRIST's principal franchise law partner is Ella Cheong, who is the senior partner of the firm and is Chairman of the Standing Committee on Intellectual Property of the Law Society of Hong Kong. Her experience in franchising has included representing both franchisors and franchisees.
In addition to her practice in Hong Kong, she has also established another practice in Singapore, which she runs concurrently with the Hong Kong practice. She is also admitted to practice in England and Australia. Ms. Cheong is active in many professional associations, including the Licensing Executive Society (LES) and the Franchising Committee of the International Bar Association. She is a committee member of the Franchise Association of Hong Kong and was Chairman of its Code of Ethics. She has served on the Board of Directors of the International Trademark Association (INTA), as well as on its Licensing Committee. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of Association Internationale pour la Protection del la Propriete Industrielle (AIPPA), having been appointed by the Bureau to represent all Asian and European independent members of the AIPPI from countries which do not have a national group. She also serves on the Council of Federation Internationale des Conseils en Propriete Industrielle (FICPI), being the first Asian to be accorded such honour.
Ms. Cheong has given many talks on all aspects of Hong Kong Intellectual Property and is the author of numerous articles relating to Intellectual Property in Hong Kong, including chapters in the Survey of Foreign Laws and Regulations Affecting International Franchising (IBA) 9 (1st and 2nd Editions) and articles in the Journal of International Franchising and Distribution Law (Frank Cass Professional Journal).
